Last Week

Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan earned its first victory of the season with a 22-14 win at Sioux Falls Lutheran on Sept. 11 in the programs’ first-ever meeting. After falling behind 6-0, the Seahawks answered with Carter Glanzer’s 1-yard touchdown run to tie the game. Glanzer broke loose for a 49-yard score in the second quarter, and Brady Jager connected with Creighton Klumb for the two-point conversion to give BEE a 14-6 halftime lead. Jager added a 2-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and found Jackson Weber for another conversion, extending the advantage to 22-6. Lutheran scored in the fourth quarter, but BEE held on to improve to 1-3.

Glanzer powered the Seahawks with 154 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries, while KJ Ripley added 40 rushing yards. BEE gained 210 of its 219 total yards on the ground, while Lutheran finished with 276 yards. The Seahawks’ defense recorded four sacks, led by Weber with three sacks, 10 tackles and a forced fumble. Coltyn Raymond paced BEE with 11 tackles, Glanzer added 10, and Ripley contributed nine tackles and three pass breakups. Klumb supplied seven tackles and a sack, while Jager intercepted a pass to help the Seahawks secure the win.

This Season

Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan enters the fifth week of the season at 1-3 after earning its first victory with a 22-14 win at Sioux Falls Lutheran. Following losses to Viborg-Hurley, Garretson and Parkston, the Seahawks took a step forward behind a productive running game and a defense that allowed a season-low 14 points. Through four games, BEE has totaled 878 yards of offense, averaging 219.5 yards per game, with 622 rushing yards and 256 passing yards. The Seahawks have scored 54 points and recorded 54 first downs, with continued improvement in ball security and defensive consistency remaining important.

Carter Glanzer leads the offense with 351 rushing yards on 59 carries, averaging 5.9 yards per attempt. He has scored four rushing touchdowns and added a punt-return touchdown while accumulating a team-high 476 all-purpose yards. Brady Jager has completed 25 of 48 passes for 256 yards and contributed 87 rushing yards and two touchdowns. KJ Ripley leads BEE with nine receptions for 115 yards, followed by Creighton Klumb with eight catches for 98 yards. Ripley has also rushed for 88 yards, returned kickoffs for 129 yards and averaged 40.1 yards on eight punts.

Coltyn Raymond continues to lead the defense with 48 tackles, followed by Glanzer with 31, Jackson Weber with 30 and Klumb with 24. Weber’s three-sack performance against Lutheran moved him into the team lead, and he has also forced two fumbles. BEE has recorded six sacks through four games, while Jager and Tait Roth each have an interception and Klumb has recovered a fumble. After holding Lutheran scoreless during the second and third quarters, the Seahawks will look to build on that defensive effort and carry the momentum from their first win into Friday’s matchup with Howard.

Last Week

Howard fell to Freeman 52-13 on Sept. 4, dropping to 1-2 heading into its bye week. Freeman improved to 3-0 behind four touchdown passes from Tayden Kerrigan, including three to David Walter. The Flyers led 14-0 after the first quarter before Noah Severson’s 1-yard touchdown run brought Howard within 14-7. Freeman answered with two scores before halftime to lead 30-7, then added 22 points in the third quarter. Severson scored Howard’s final touchdown on a 25-yard run in the fourth.

Drew Maier led Howard with 61 rushing yards on seven carries, while Kolt Becker added 49 yards on five attempts and Owen Feldhaus rushed for 35 yards. Severson finished with 26 yards and two touchdowns on two carries. Maier completed three of eight passes for 18 yards as the Tigers totaled 199 yards of offense, including 181 on the ground. Walter led Freeman’s receivers with four catches for 143 yards and touchdowns of 50, 38 and 47 yards. Pete Rembold added a 10-yard touchdown reception as the Flyers finished with 268 passing yards.

This Season

Howard enters Friday’s game against BEE with a 1–2 record following last week’s bye. The Tigers opened with a 54–22 win over De Smet before falling 14–8 to Castlewood and 52–13 to Freeman. Through three games, Howard has averaged 288 yards of offense, with 201.7 yards coming on the ground and 86.3 through the air. The Tigers have scored 75 points while allowing 88.

Senior fullback Kolt Becker leads Howard with 242 rushing yards on 32 carries and five rushing touchdowns. He ran for 156 yards and four scores in the opener and added a 58-yard touchdown reception. Junior Owen Feldhaus has carried 25 times for 128 yards, while senior quarterback Drew Maier has added 133 rushing yards. Noah Severson scored both Howard touchdowns against Freeman on runs of one and 25 yards.

Maier has completed 18 of 28 passes for 259 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. Becker also leads the receiving totals with six catches for 86 yards, followed by Hoyt Kizer with four receptions for 82 yards and a touchdown. Kingsten Feldhaus caught a 42-yard touchdown against De Smet, and Chas Shumaker has four catches for 36 yards. After scoring eight touchdowns in their opener, the Tigers have managed three over their last two games as they look to get back to .500 against the Seahawks.

This Day in Seahawk History

1998 - Emery/Ethan evened its record at 2–2 with a 34–16 win over Artesian/Letcher in Ethan. Tony Olinger rushed for 144 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries and caught and another score. E/E broke an 8–8 first-quarter tie to lead 16–8 at halftime and 22–8 after three quarters. The Seahawks finished with 227 yards on the ground. Ryan Budahl led the defense with seven tackles, two sacks and a fumble recovery, helping E/E force three turnovers while holding Artesian/Letcher to 216 total yards.

2009 - Emery/Ethan improved to 3–0 with a 34–0 win over Parker in Emery. Jordon Connor rushed for 135 yards on 12 carries and Tim Olinger added 113 yards on 14 attempts, each scoring twice. E/E led 18–0 at halftime and finished with 339 total yards, including 256 on the ground. Justin Grosdidier completed five of nine passes for 80 yards and a touchdown to Tyson Kayser, who caught two passes for 33 yards. The defense held Parker to 154 yards and five first downs. Cody Riggs led E/E with 15 tackles and a sack, followed by Olinger with 14 tackles.

2020 - Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan improved to 5–0 with a 52–6 win over McCook Central/Montrose in Bridgewater. Koby Kayser rushed for 238 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries, scoring on runs of 62, 74 and 55 yards. Bodie Burnham added 98 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown, as the Seahawks finished with 403 rushing yards and led 26–6 at halftime. BEE forced eight turnovers, with Kayser and Eric Gustafson returning interceptions for touchdowns. Gustafson also caught a 46-yard touchdown pass from Sam Hofer, while Rylee Schultz scored on a five-yard pass from Kaden Klumb. Schultz led the defense with 14 tackles, followed by Kayser with 13 and Hofer with 11.

Renewing the series: Friday marks the ninth meeting and the first since 2014, with the series tied 4–4. Howard won the last two after the Seahawks took four straight from 2010–2012.
Closest finish: BEE’s 28–26 win in 2012 was the only meeting decided by fewer than 10 points. Kyelle Herrick rushed for 105 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensive high point: BEE held Howard to 89 total yards and forced four turnovers in its 46–6 playoff win in 2011—the largest victory margin in the series.

The Seahawk Junior High team fell to 2-1 on the year after a loss to Parkston this week. They will play in the Hanson Jamboree tomorrow morning and then host Howard on Monday at 4 pm in Bridgewater.
